Independent Photo Exercises

Independent Photo Exercises

Due: Wed. Dec. 10th

Choose THREE of the exercises from the menu below.

  • For each exercise: take 10 or more photographs (keep all your attempts!)
  • Then select your best 3 photos to edit in Lightroom.

Why?

Part of improving any skill or talent is PRACTICE. Think of sports teams, music bands, dancers…. they all have to practice to improve. The following photo exercises ask that you continue to use all the fundamentals of photography that you have learned so far.

When & Where?

These exercises are to be completed on your own time, or when you are finished with other projects/assignments in my class. They can be taken on and off campus.

How?

Preferably with a DSLR camera and using either M, Av, or Tv modes. But, using your phone’s camera is also acceptable (FYI: some phone features and some apps allow you to set the “aperture” and “shutter speed”).

Portrait of a Place

Photo Project: Portrait of a Place

Due:  Monday Dec. 8th

Check out more examples here: Portrait of a Place Student Projects

Create a series of 6 photos that explore ONE particular place of your choosing. You must take new photos just for this project! You cannot use photos from the past. I want to see your current skills and I want you to incorporate the camera angles, elements of art, and camera settings we learned about.

Feel free to get creative! Use story telling or pick a mood as you explore a place. Maybe make a normal every-day place look spooky!

Places to consider:

  • park
  • mall
  • home
  • backyard
  • garage
  • your room
  • someone’s workplace
  • store (grocery, thrift, mall, plaza, etc.)
  • garden
  • nail salon
  • barbershop
  • skatepark
  • farm/rancho
  • an abandoned place
  • cafe
  • carnival/fair
  • miniature golf
  • movie theater
  • If choosing Summit campus, try to get more specific: library, admin office, gym, cafeteria/MPR, band room, art class, auto class, etc.

Posting Instructions:

Pick your best 6 photos, making sure you have a good mix of shallow, medium, and great depth of field. Edit the photos in Lightroom, making sure you use a similar editing style for all to make them unified.

Make a new blog post, titled “Portrait of a Place: [name the place here]”. Add a gallery showcasing your 6 edited photos. Use medium or large size, link to media file, 3 columns.
