Gallery Walk Instructions

1. Take out a sheet of paper.
2. Put your name on it and place it in front of your computer (tuck in keyboard under monitor to make space).
3. Display your Clone Project AND Photo Challenges (two separate browser windows, side by side).
4. Wait for my cue to walk around to view everyone’s work AND wait for the next cue to sit down at another classmate’s desk.
5. Use their notebook paper to answer the feedback questions displayed on the class screen.
6. We will only complete two rounds of feedback (meaning you’ll leave feedback for two people).

Today’s Agenda:

• Introducing new Photo Challenge options to choose from!
• Get caught up!!!!
• You must turn in the Portrait Preparation PowerPoint that was due Tuesday before you can go out to take photos.

When you decide on a photo challenge, you should do a quick Google Image search for ideas to plan out your shots:

• “shadow photography”
• “reflection photography”
• “abstract photography”
• “product photography”
• “group portrait photography/band photography”
• “obscured/conceptual self-portrait”, etc. 

Apply the knowledge you’ve learned about what makes a good photograph, such as: sharp focus, good exposure, unique camera angles, good composition, appropriate editing, creativity, emotion, drama, storytelling…

You may choose any photo challenge from either list.  We have two more challenges left, make them count and have some fun with them!

Create a Powerpoint where you can type out the answers to the preparation guide below.

Title your PPT “Authentic Portrait Project Preparation” and add your name + class period.

Your slide order should include only the following from the preparation guide:

• Slide 1: Brainstorm (Step 1 in guide)- make a list of important adults in your life and narrow it down to one for this project. Make a list of things about your chosen subject.
• Slide 2: Clarify your Vision (Step 2 in guide)-answer the questions about the vision you have for the portraits
• Slide 3: Mapping Out the Flow (step 4 in guide)-provide your own “flow” and jot down some of the questions that help get the momentum going.
• Slide 4: Approaching Subjects: summarize info and provide your own “script”.
• Slide 5: Directing Subjects: summarize info and copy some of the directional tips that you could use in your shoot.

-You must choose an adult in your life for this project. Someone that you love, admire, or respect.

-Post 3-4 portraits and include 2 paragraphs explaining who the person is and why you chose them for your significance portrait project. Include information that you gathered from your interview questions.

• Practice the 6 portrait light patterns with a partner using window lights.
• Make one good portrait example for each of the 6 portrait lighting patterns using studio lights for the Portrait Light Pattern Project.

Portrait Light Patterns Project

First, you can practice the 6 portrait light patterns with a partner using window lights. You can even do this without a camera, just so you know how to position your subject to create the shadow patterns you need.

Make one good portrait example for each of the 6 portrait lighting patterns using studio lights.

Edit your best examples to post on your blog with the pattern + camera settings in the captions. 

• Butterfly…light is in front and above subject=symmetrical shadow under nose
• Loop…light is to one side at about 45 degree angle=small loop shadow on one side of nose
• Rembrandt…subject continues to turn away from light=the loop nose shadow will meet the cheek shadow and hopefully produce a triangle of light under the eye on shadow side.
• Split…subject continues to turn away from light=one half of the face is in shadow.
• Broad…subject turns away from light=broad side of face has light, short side in shadow.
• Short...subject turns back towards light=short side of face has light, broad side in shadow.

Camera Settings: When using the remote studio light, keep shutter speed at 1/200, no faster. Lowest ISO you can get away with, low f-stop number.
