Mon.9/25: Posting and Turning in Levitation Project

Today’s Agenda:

  • Levitation Project Posting Instructions
  • Catch up on past missing work

Levitation Project –Posting Instructions

-Look through all your saved photos and delete ONLY those that DO NOT capture action in midair.

-Then look for the photos that you took as the photographer.  Pick your best 2 photos to edit in Lightroom.

-Now pick 2-3 photos taken by other group members that you think are pretty good. Edit those in Lightroom as well.

Create a new blog post and title it, “Levitation Project”. You will insert 3 galleries.

  • Gallery 1: YOUR two edited photos. Change link to media file! Caption the photos with the shutter speed that was used.
  • Gallery 2: Two or three edited photos from your group members. Change link to media file! Caption the photos with the shutter speed that was used.
  • Gallery 3: Ten or more unedited photos that your group took AND that are different from the ones you edited.  I’m curious to see your group’s other action attempts! 🙂

Publish and turn in on Teams.

To check the shutter speed used in a photo:

Open the file explorer from the bottom task bar on your computer:

Locate the photo you need info for and RIGHT CLICK on that photo.

Select Properties, then select Details.

Scroll down to the camera info to find the “exposure time” (aka shutter speed).

Levitation Project

Levitation Project

Objective: Experiment with fast shutter speeds to freeze action in the air.

Photo Shoot Instructions: Take turns with your group members so everyone gets to photograph, and everyone participates in the photos. I suggest each group member takes about 5 minutes attempting to photograph the action of their group members. Then switch roles and change up the action when you change photographer.

Camera Settings: Shutter Speed Priority mode (Tv), shutter speeds 1/500-1/4000, ISO 400-800, Automatic Focus (AF). Use continuous shooting drive mode.

Post-Shoot Instructions: When we’re back in the classroom, put the lens cap back on the camera. Take turns saving all the photos you each took into a folder in your OneDrive. After everyone double checks they have their own photos, have someone format the card in the camera. Return camera to the table.

Analyze and Reflect: Take some time to look at the photos you took and reflect on how they could be improved. This includes timing, camera angles, elements of art, composition, and creativity. We will be back out again tomorrow to refine our attempts. Discuss what changes you’ll make with your group.

  • Get acquainted with assigned groups and with changing the shutter speed on the DSLRs.
  • Discuss Levitation Project-we’re taking photos outside Thurs and Fri. Dress intentionally.

Check out the work of the following photographers:

  • How can we tell when fast shutter speeds were used in a photograph?
  • Whose work do you like the most and why?
  • Save a few photos that you would like to use as inspiration.

Natsumi Hayashi

Philippe Halsman

Diego Huerta

Alyssa Trofort

Trofort’s site images may be blocked, here’s a Google Image search result of her photography: Alyssa Trofort Google Image Results

Practice the following with your group members:

  • Changing the camera mode to shutter priority (Tv).
  • Using the main dial to change the shutter speed.  Tomorrow we will use 1/500 or faster.
  • Changing the ISO.  Tomorrow we will be at 400-800 or so.
  • Change the drive mode to continuous shooting. This will help us capture more of the action tomorrow.
