Portrait Light Pattern Group Project

Portrait Light Pattern Group Project

Due Wednesday Feb. 26th

Portrait Lighting Guides – Thomas Schmall

Objective: Apply the portrait light patterns using studio lights, wand lights, or window lights.  In addition, you can attempt some of these patterns right outside the classroom with a reflector if necessary.

Instructions: Each of you must capture a portrait of your group members using all 7 portrait patterns. Group members will assist the photographer as subjects and assistants. Then take turns.

Posting Instructions: Edit your best portrait for each pattern. Post your 7 edited portraits to your blog as a gallery. Link to media file, 4 columns, medium size. Caption with the portrait pattern. Title Post: My Portrait Light Patterns.

Camera Settings: Make sure your exposure is good before attempting the patterns!

  • Mode: Manual
  • Aperture: lowest f-stop (4.5-5.6)
  • Shutter Speed: depends on lighting, start at 1/200 and adjust if necessary
  • ISO: 400
  • Focal Length: 50-55mm (zoomed in)
  • Auto Focus (AF)

Portrait Light Patterns:

  1. Flat: light is in front at subject’s height=soft even lighting with no shadows
  2. Butterfly: light is in front and above subject=small symmetrical shadow under nose.
  3. Loop: light is to one side at about 45-degree angle=small loop shadow on one side of nostril.
  4. Rembrandt: subject continues to turn away from light=the loop nose shadow will meet the cheek shadow and hopefully produce a triangle (or spot) of light under the eye on shadow side.
  5. Split: subject continues to turn away from light=one half of the face is in shadow.
  6. Broad: subject turns away from light=broad side of face has light, short side in shadow.
  7. Short: subject turns back towards light=short side of face has light, broad side in shadow.

Wed 2/19: Macro Photography Gallery Walk

Today’s Agenda:

  • Macro Photography Gallery Walk
  • Turn in missing assignments
  • Form groups for portrait light pattern photos

Macro Photography Gallery Walk Instructions

Setting Up-

  • Go to your published post and make sure your gallery of 8 photos can be clicked on. Also, make sure their size is medium, and columns are either 4 or 2 across.
  • Get a piece of paper and fold in half 3 times to create 8 boxes.
  • Put your name on the back of the paper.
  • In the front of the paper, number the boxes to match the layout of your gallery (either 4 or 2 across).

Gallery Walk-

  • Leave your paper, number side up, at your desk.
  • Have a pen or pencil in hand, wait for my cue to scoot down one seat over. I will instruct when to move to the next seat.
  • We will do our best to get to every seat!
  • Click on all of their 8 photos to view.
  • Select the one you think is best and put your name down in the corresponding box on their paper. Don’t write too big, leave room for others!

After the Gallery Walk-

  • Turn the paper over to where you wrote your name.
  • Tell me which is your favorite photo of yours and why.
  • I will collect your papers.

Want to submit photos to the new District Arts Magazine?

If you want to submit a photo, I have a USB drive at my desk where you can save the photo. Just rename the file with your name.

Here is an email I received from our Visual & Performing Arts Coordinator:

“Good afternoon, Arts Teachers and Site Administrators,

I’m excited to share an idea to spotlight student creativity in our Fontana community. I am creating a District Arts Magazine, and I’d love to feature student photography on the cover.

Here’s how your students can get involved:

  • Photographs of your schools or the district office are needed for the cover (be as creative as they can).
  • We’re also introducing a special section on digital photography, showcasing student work.

If your students would like to participate, please send their submissions along with the student’s name, grade, school, and technique.”
